All Fans Are Invited to Be the Additional Haim Member.

"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated supporters have openly coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their visuals frequently show them walking in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to make music."

"So everyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Recognition

The trio are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The album was born from a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent resilience demanded a new sound – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

One man ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international fan base.

Yet Haim will consistently be their top focus.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
